Now the reason we need advanced IR is because people have written what they like without thinking about how it will be retrieved later and why should they have to think about that? Why cripple the writing experience by wondering who is going to be looking for it and how? It’s like doing SEO on a document while you write it. No that is not the answer but this leaves us with a big problem. Lots of information being created by lots of different people who interpret language grammar and other nuances slightly differently. See how this fits with APML? There are going to be lots of different sources of APML lots of creators lots of editors. We are going to end up with large ecosystem of all different types of attention data in fact we’ll probably be able to tell who made the attention data based on how it looks. Just like we can tell if something is written by Shakespeare or Einstein. The attention ecosystem will not be something as easy to analyse as a MySQL Table it will be rich with nuances and different interpretations. There will be a very long tail on attention data and some overwhelmingly obvious bits of data just like there is in IR. As I said on the mailing list each piece of attention data shouldn’t just be taken as absolute it is a point in context of ALL the other attention data out there just like a word in english only means something because it is found with other words (there are some exceptions of course try explain the word “left” only using words). It’s the analysis of the attention around a single point that will give the real meaning of that point itself. The solution to this problem is to manage attention data just like we manage other forms of data. It’s so similar to the problem statement of IR it’s not funny. So that’s it lets look at the analysis of attention data just like we look at the analysis of other forms of data. This is where the link Bill sent me comes in the large scale analysis of sparse data. If you haven’t read the link about i urge you to. I’ll go into some detail here but probably not as clearly as that article. This all stems from the analysis of sparse data. Now if someone has some attention data that says they paid attention to “Paris Hilton” and “Nicole Richie” but not to “Lindsay Lohan” chances are it’s not because they aren’t interested its probably more like they just never saw any information about Lohan. So we have some missing data. Now based on the fact that there are millions of other people out there paying attention to all three there is a very real chance that our person who has only seen Richie and Hilton is probably interested in Lohan voila scale that up to millions of attention profiles and even more concepts to pay attention to and you have large scale analysis of attention data. There are some ways to reduce the complexity of you model of the attention ecosystem to help bring these relationships out. Once I have some time and some experimental data. APML essentially adds weights to tags not based on frequency but based on relevancy. Thats a wildly powerful idea when it comes to finding related and relevant material With regard to text-analytics. I see two broad areas where it is applicable to APML one is in the generation of APML itself. “how do we best represent the things that people are interested in?” and in the use of APML so “how can we suggest better things based on some existing APML?” Both of these applications can be solved by answering the first problem but not all APML is going to be created by intelligent text analysis tools so we need to keep an eye on the second one too When it comes to social networks and integration etc. I think it depends on what the particular application is for example,if I store information about my most frequently visited friends in an APML file. I’m essentially exporting my Social graph. I’m not convinced whether this is bad or good yet. I do have some more specific ideas about uses in social settings but I don’t want to talk about them just yet… when we launch out product I’ll go into more detail.
